Hybrid working enables a flexible way of working and has become an integral part of the modern working world. It offers employees the freedom to choose their place of work according to personal preferences and individual needs. Instead of being bound to rigid working hours, they can do their work in the office, home office or other locations. The experience during the Corona pandemic in particular has accelerated this change and underscored the importance of hybrid work models.

The various hybrid work models can be adapted to the different requirements of employers and employees. There are four basic variants here:

– The office-first model involves working primarily in the office, while home office and remote work remain the exception.

– The fully flexible model gives employees the freedom to decide for themselves when and where they want to work. This offers them maximum flexibility in shaping their working day.

– In the partially flexible model, employees have the option of working remotely on some days. The exact arrangements can either be fixed or they are free to choose the number of home office days per month.

– In the remote-first model, work generally takes place remotely, with the office only being used as a work location in exceptional cases.

Hybrid working brings numerous advantages. Employees can reduce their commute times to the office, which saves time and money. In addition, the flexibility of hybrid work models offers a better work-life balance, especially for parents. There are also benefits for companies, as shared workplaces and reduced office space can save costs, for example. In addition, hybrid working is perceived as attractive by potential applicants and can offer an advantage in the competition for talent. It also combines the best of both worlds by combining the benefits of home office and office work.

However, there are also challenges associated with hybrid work models. For managers in particular, coordinating team members in different locations and at different times requires more work and organization. Face-to-face interaction with colleagues can also be limited, as communication often takes place via digital tools. This can have a negative impact on the sense of community within teams. It is important to take appropriate measures here, such as regular presence days, to promote personal exchange and to identify possible overload of employees in the home office at an early stage.

In addition, office concepts must be adapted to the requirements of hybrid working. Offices no longer serve only as a place to work, but also as a place to meet and exchange ideas. It is important to create a suitable room layout that offers space for both concentrated work and teamwork.

When introducing hybrid working models, it is crucial to create clear rules and structures and to inform and involve employees accordingly. Companies that set the course for hybrid working at an early stage have a better chance of retaining employees and being perceived as attractive employers in the long term. Applicants are also paying more attention to a company’s working conditions and workplace concept, which is of great importance in the competition for talent.

Hybrid working undoubtedly has a promising future and offers both employees and companies numerous advantages. It is an opportunity to be seized in order to make the working world more flexible and agile.
