Disruptive changes no longer creep up on us slowly—they hit us with full force. Those who ignore them risk being overwhelmed. Those who understand them can use them to their advantage.

Disruption happens—whether you want it to or not. It doesn’t knock politely; it simply shows up.

There’s no shortage of examples: Blockbuster and its 9,000 video stores—until Netflix arrived. Blackberry, once essential—until the iPhone changed everything. Today, disruption occurs by the second, driven by technologies that learn in real time.

Artificial intelligence is the most powerful transformation of our era. It changes how we work, decide, and lead. Yet many leaders face it helplessly—confused, hesitant, planless. While entire value chains are rebuilt, others cling to outdated mindsets.

This isn’t happening someday—it’s happening now.

Disruptions are happening faster and more frequently than ever before.

Why predictability is becoming an illusion

“We thought we still had time.” You hear that a lot these days. But that’s the mistake—disruption doesn’t announce itself. It’s an earthquake that shakes entire systems.

Futurist Alvin Toffler put it perfectly:

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

The key question is no longer if change will come, but how we respond when it does—and when our plan becomes worthless overnight.

In many German companies, there’s an almost religious belief in planning. Annual plans, strategy roadmaps, target agreements—all carefully prepared. Then a new technology or geopolitical shock appears, and those plans collapse like a house of cards.

Former Meta COO Sheryl Sandberg captured it well:

“If you make a plan for tomorrow, you might already be limiting yourself to today’s opportunities.”

Planning provides orientation—but not security. Overplanning means missing the moment to act.

Leadership today means having the courage to embrace uncertainty.

Leading Today: Try, Observe, Adapt

In a complex world, leaders don’t need rigid concepts but flexible approaches. Three principles guide this mindset:

  • Vision over Masterplan: Give clear direction without getting lost in details. Those who know where they want to go will find a path—even if it’s not a straight one.

  • Step by Step: Progress comes from decisive movement, not grand gestures. Blue Origin’s motto “Gradatim Ferociter”—step by step, but ferociously—has become the new leadership mantra.

  • Build. Measure. Learn.: Develop, test, learn, repeat. The Lean Startup approach is no longer just for founders—it’s a leadership principle.

Mark Zuckerberg once said it bluntly:

“Move fast and break things.”

Speed, curiosity, and tolerance for mistakes are no longer risks—they’re survival skills. Those who don’t test and fail are overtaken by those who do.

Which Leadership Qualities Matter Now

In our coaching sessions, we meet leaders in the midst of transformation: strategies change faster than org charts, employees seek orientation, and uncertainty becomes the new normal.

Successful leaders don’t insist on having all the answers—they ask better questions. They don’t promise perfection—they stay calm amid uncertainty. They may not know everything, but they communicate clearly and with empathy.

These are the skills that count now:

  • Clarity despite ambiguity

  • Presence under pressure

  • Dialogue instead of monologue

And the good news: all of these can be learned.
