Hybrid Meetings: Emotional Intelligence as a Leadership Skill
The Emotional Intelligence in Hybrid Meetings is often underestimated – yet it strongly determines motivation, trust, and effectiveness. Monday morning, 9 a.m.: a regular meeting in a mid-sized company begins. Cameras are turned off, one colleague speaks too long, others remain silent. The leader asks people to join in, but with little effect. After the call, team members text each other: “What a waste of time…”, “Did the boss even notice what’s going on?”
Such scenes are not exceptions – they are everyday reality. Hybrid meetings connect offices, but they often disconnect people.
Why Emotional Intelligence in Hybrid Meetings Matters
Many leaders rely on agendas, tools, and technical setups for virtual formats. But focusing only on content misses the essence of leadership:
-
People follow people – not numbers, not KPIs, not tools.
-
Emotional intelligence builds resonance and motivation.
-
Leaders who show empathy foster engagement and trust.
Leading from a distance means recognizing emotions, listening actively, and addressing concerns. Research confirms that teams led with empathy perform better and show higher resilience (see Harvard Business Review).

What Leaders Often Underestimate in Hybrid Meetings
-
Small talk is not a luxury but social glue.
-
Emotions are subtler online and require active listening.
-
Conflicts simmer longer when not visible.
-
Feedback loses impact if delivered without empathy.
-
Team spirit only grows when leaders create connection.
The good news: Emotional intelligence can be learned – and trained.
The Key: Emotional Presence Without Physical Space
In my book “Communication is Leadership Task No. 1” I describe why resonance is so critical:
“Trust arises where clarity exists. And clarity needs resonance.”
Take this example: A Senior Sales Manager sets clear quarterly targets in an online meeting. The facts are solid, the slides structured – but no one responds. Why? The team feels uncertain due to recent turnover and high workload. Only when the leader acknowledges these concerns and shows empathy do cameras switch on, discussions become livelier, and resonance emerges.
Similarly, a Hidden Champion in the machinery industry succeeds by starting every virtual meeting with an open round: “What has been on your mind this week?” Not mandatory, but an invitation to connect. Feedback is also varied: sometimes in chat, sometimes verbal, sometimes in breakout rooms. The result: stronger participation, better atmosphere, fewer misunderstandings.
How to Train Emotional Intelligence in Hybrid Meetings
-
Be visible: Look into the camera to create eye contact.
-
Stay approachable: Address people by name, show real interest.
-
React with empathy: Mirror moods (“I sense there’s some frustration …”).
-
Use structures for connection: Check-ins, polls, mood boards.
-
Encourage feedback: “What helped today, what didn’t?”
Conclusion: Emotional Intelligence Makes Leadership Effective
Hybrid meetings are here to stay. But real impact doesn’t come from technology – it comes from empathy, resonance, and presence. Emotional intelligence is not a “soft skill” but a core leadership tool.
👉 Let’s strengthen it together: With targeted communication training, you can increase your emotional impact – online and on site.
